Abstract

The objective of the current study was to identify the levels of parenting styles and the emotional intelligence dimensions of seventh and twelfth grade students in the Sultanate of Oman. It also aimed to detect the differences in these variables according to gender and grade. To measure parenting styles, the researchers used the Parenting Authority Questionnaire developed by Buri (1991) and adapted by Aldhafri et al. (2011) for the Omani context. The PAQ consists of 20 items divided into three types (authoritative, authoritarian and permissive). Emotional intelligence was measured using Alsamadouni’s scale (2007). The study sample consisted of 1162 students randomly selected. The results showed that authoritative and authoritarian styles were the most common among Omani families. The results also indicated high levels of the dimensions of emotional intelligence, except for empathy. The results also showed statistically significant differences in the study variables attributed to gender and grade. The findings suggest that it is possible to predict the dimensions of intelligence using the six parenting styles.
