The movement represents a modern spiritual phenomenon that has expanded widely in contemporary society, particularly through discourses on self-development, non-religious spirituality, consciousness science, and holistic health. This study adopts a qualitative approach that focuses on critical textual content analysis of the internal experiences disclosed by Randall Baer as a former key leader of the movement. The focus of the study is to identify its epistemological foundations, such as concepts of sources of knowledge and authority of truth, as well as other related themes, by comparing them with the framework of Islamic epistemology grounded in tawhid, revelation (wahy), reason guided by revelation, and the hierarchy of knowledge. The findings of the study indicate that the epistemology of the New Age Movement is subjective in nature, rejecting revelation as a source of knowledge while elevating inner experience as an absolute source of truth. It also promotes notions of pantheism, monism, and self-deification when examined against evidence from classical and contemporary Islamic scholars. In addition, the movement reflects an epistemological crisis and a loss of adab as described by Al-Attas, wherein humans are positioned as the centre of truth and the absolute source of knowledge from God is denied. This worldview cannot be Islamized because its foundations fundamentally contradict the principles of Islamic creed (aqidah) and the Islamic worldview. Therefore, this study is able to refute the fundamental basis of NAM spirituality, namely subjective mystical experience, the rejection of the authority of revelation, and the construction of spirituality through speculation and religious innovation, thereby addressing the challenges of modern spirituality within the context of the Muslim community in Malaysia.

2026-04-27T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2026 Mohd Aiman Barudin, Mohamad Hasmimie Mohd Yusofhttps://al-qanatir.com/aq/article/view/1481GUIDELINES COMPLIANCE ON ENTERTAINMENT CONTROL IN KELANTAN2026-04-21T05:59:49+08:00Nurul Shuhada’ Balqis ZulkarnainP125492@siswa.ukm.edu.myMohd Nasran Mohamadnasran@ukm.edu.my
Entertainment is not a foreign concept to the general public. In fact, several studies have shown that entertainment is a fundamental aspect of human life. Islam itself does not prohibit entertainment, provided that it adheres to the boundaries prescribed by Shariah law. Nevertheless, in today’s increasingly complex socio-cultural environment, many members of the Muslim community; particularly among the youth, have become influenced by Western cultural norms, especially the hedonistic lifestyle. In response to this, the Kelantan State Government has established specific guidelines and enacted legislation concerning cultural, artistic, and entertainment-related activities. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of enforcement mechanisms and the level of compliance by event organisers and the general public with the guidelines issued by the Kelantan State Government. The primary objective is to ensure that entertainment activities are conducted in accordance with Islamic principles and within the legal framework provided. A qualitative methodology was employed in this study, including document analysis of official circulars, gazettes, enactments, and state-issued guidelines. Additionally, the research involved library-based study and fieldwork, including interviews with relevant government officers. It is hoped that this study will contribute to academic discourse in the fields of arts and entertainment from an Islamic perspective, while also enhancing public understanding of the principles governing permissible forms of entertainment in Islam. Findings indicate that the existing legal frameworks and guidelines have played a significant role in regulating entertainment activities in Kelantan, ensuring they remain consistent with Islamic values. However, the study also identifies several challenges, such as inadequate monitoring of non-compliant organisers and inconsistencies in the implementation and enforcement of the established guidelines.

2026-04-27T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2026 Nurul Shuhada’ Balqis Zulkarnain, Mohd Nasran Mohamadhttps://al-qanatir.com/aq/article/view/1482AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF BLENDED SILK FABRIC FOR MEN'S USE: AN ANALYSIS OF CONTEMPORARY FATWA2026-04-21T06:41:05+08:00Mohd Mahyeddin Mohd Sallehmahyeddin@usim.edu.myMohd Nasir Abdul Majidnasirmajid08@usim.edu.myNurdalila A’wani Aziznurdalila.awani@usim.edu.my
Silk-based clothing presents a current challenge in the textile industry, particularly for Muslim men. According to several Islamic legal evidences (dalil syarak), the prohibition of pure silk for men is clearly established. However, difficulties arise in determining the ruling, especially when it involves fabrics blended with pure silk and other non-silk materials. There is also ambiguity regarding the permissible proportion of silk allowed by Islamic law. Therefore, this article aims to clarify the definition of silk according to Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), identify the types of blended silk batik available in the market, and analyze fatwas regarding the use of blended and synthetic silk. The research uses a qualitative methodology with data collection methods including document analysis, observation, interviews, and FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) laboratory analysis. The study’s findings indicate that the Islamic ruling on blended silk is determined based on the proportion of pure silk contained in the product. The rulings on blended silk can be categorized as follows: (1) haram (prohibited) – if the silk content is greater than other materials, (2) permissible – if the silk content is less than the other materials, (3) also permissible – if the silk content is equal to that of other materials. Laboratory results found that blended silk elements in the market fall into a different category than pure silk. The study also proposes the development of a silk detection tool to assist in more accurate and rapid identification of silk content.

2026-04-27T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2026 Mohd Mahyeddin Mohd Salleh, Mohd Nasir Abdul Majid, Nurdalila A’wani Azizhttps://al-qanatir.com/aq/article/view/1314PARAMETERS OF CONTEMPORARY FATWA IN THE MUSLIM MINORITY COUNTRY2025-08-26T10:42:43+08:00Humairaa Abdul Rahimp153410@siswa.ukm.edu.myMohd Izhar Ariff Mohd Kashimizhar@ukm.edu.myBadli Shah Alauddinbad@pahang.gov.my
This article discusses the parameters or fundamental principles in issuing contemporary fatwas, particularly for Muslim minorities residing in non-Muslim countries. Muslim minority communities living in secular nations face various socio-legal and cultural challenges that are significantly different from those experienced by Muslims in majority-Muslim societies. Therefore, fatwa institutions and authoritative muftis must adopt a framework that is aligned with the contemporary realities of these communities. The objective of this study is to identify five key parameters in contemporary fatwa issuance: maqasid al-shariah (as the foundation for assessing public interest or maslahah), i‘tibar al-waqi‘ (consideration of current realities), fiqh al-aqalliyyat (minority fiqh), taysir (facilitation), and ijtihad jama‘i (collective ijtihad). This study also examines the application of these principles by fatwa institutions such as the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR) and the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS). Employing a qualitative scoping analysis, the study analyzes the content of fatwa literature and resolutions issued by these institutions. The findings show that the application of parameters is essential to ensure that fatwas remain contextually relevant, balanced, and aligned with the higher objectives of Islamic law (maqasid al-shariah), while also addressing the evolving needs of Muslim minorities. This research is crucial in reinforcing the legitimacy, consistency, and clarity of contemporary fatwa practices within the context of Muslim minority communities.

Data were collected from 15 management staff member across all key departments related to mortgage via semi-structured interview and analysed using NVivo thematic techniques. The results showed that Shari’ah compliance (53.33%) and transparency (46.67%) are the most influential variables on financial inclusion, which enhances trust among the unbanked people by prohibiting riba and enabling fairness and risk-sharing. Other drivers consist of affordable housing initiatives, no hidden fees, variety of products, and partnerships with state governments. These features have allowed Islamic banks to penetrate the unbanked population and complemented Nigeria’s alarming housing deficit. It argues that Ungku Aziz offers a plausible alternative to growth-based development by establishing the economic policy in the ethical purpose, social justice, and institutional responsibility. Based on his texts on poverty, education, rural development, and nation building, the article reinvents his conception of development as implicitly organized around maqad sharieah, especially safeguarding against poverty, livelihood, knowledge and social bonding. It is brought out that the core of the argument is that Ungku Aziz understood development as human based process where markets, the state and social institutions serve as means as opposed to ends; economic effectiveness is thus secondary to moral responsibility and distributive justice. The paper contextualises this philosophy in the post colonial developmental process in Malaysia and shows how this philosophy is applicable to the current problems of inequality, financialisation and policy fragmentation. The paper adopts a qualitative interpretive design based on textual and policy analysis. The analysis suggests that his approach can be interpreted as a form of Islamic moral economy that is pragmatic, policy based, and institutionally-based and not just normative. The paper ends by stating that reconsidering the Islamic philosophy of development in the writings of Ungku Aziz can add value to the ongoing discussion of sustainable and inclusive development in Malaysia by recovering the ethics as a key type of economic argumentation.

2026-04-27T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2026 Muhammad Suhaimi, Fuadah Johari, Nuur Halimatus Saadiah Masrukhinhttps://al-qanatir.com/aq/article/view/1175THE THE PRINCIPLE OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE JUDICIARY AND THE PROBLEMS OF ITS APPLICATION IN PALESTINE IN THE LIGHT OF ISLAMIC LAW2025-08-16T07:06:57+08:00Mohammed R. M. Elshobake mshobake@iium.edu.my
The role of the judiciary is to adjudicate cases and resolve disputes. To achieve this, judges must be independent, impartial, and free from any external influence or authority. The Palestinian legislator has explicitly enshrined the principle of judicial independence in the Palestinian Basic Law and other legislation related to the judiciary. However, several challenges hinder the optimal application of the principle of judicial independence. This paper aims to elucidate these challenges and propose solutions by employing an inductive and analytical approach, considering Islamic jurisprudence's stance on judicial independence. This paper concludes that Islamic jurisprudence predates modern legal systems in emphasising the principle of judicial independence and providing safeguards for its enforcement. Additionally, legal provisions of judicial independence often contain ambiguities and lack clarity, especially concerning the regulation of the relationship between the judiciary and other authorities. The paper recommends the full implementation of the principle of judicial independence and the removal of any conflicting elements within the Palestinian judicial system. Such measures would have a significant impact on achieving justice.

2026-04-27T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2026 Mohammed R. On the Islamic law side, it frames ownership as a protected right grounded in maqāṣid -allocation, empowerment, and the prevention of harm and abuse- while recognizing narrowly tailored restrictions to safeguard public interest. On the positive-law side, it analyzes the Kuwaiti Civil Code rules on ownership and registration, documentary proof, and the special regime governing non-Kuwaiti real-estate ownership under Decree-Law No. 74/1979, together with company-law developments (including single-shareholder companies) and their relevance to Bidun status. The study also highlights under-addressed economic aspects -access to title, inheritance, finance, and commercial activity- showing how documentation and eligibility requirements, rather than the abstract recognition of ownership, primarily constrain Bidun’s effective enjoyment of property. Findings indicate a structural gap between doctrinal acknowledgment and practical attainability due to proof, registration, and capacity barriers. The paper proposes incremental, pragmatic reforms: streamlining documentary and registration pathways; time-bounding exceptional restrictions; enabling organized forms of ownership or regulated usufruct where long-standing ties to Kuwait are established; and preserving verification tools to maintain public order. Such steps aim to reconcile legal certainty with equity in a manner consistent with Kuwait’s legal framework and the objectives of Islamic law.

2026-04-27T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2026 Abdullah Matar Tulaihan Alshammari, Ameen Ahmed Abdullah Qasem Al-Nahari, Luqman Abdullah
