Abstract

This paper tackles the complex issue of affirming the literal meaning of the descriptive attributes of God (al-sifat al-khabariayah), and its anthropomorphic and corporalist underpinnings that it entails. The study focuses on the thought of Muqatil ibn Sulayman al-Balkhi al-Khurasani. First, it explores how the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions approached the issue of God’s attributes, in a manner that upheld the transcendence of God (tanzih). Then, it deals with the theological shift from the tanzih to anthropomorphism, through the literal reading of God’s attributes by Muqatil Ibn Sulayman. At the end the paper discusses the reception of Muqatil’s anthropomorphism by Islamic scholars during the early centuries of Islam. It uses the historical inductive methodology to tackle the early formation and development of anthropomorphist approach of the descriptive attributes. The paper reached several findings, among which is that the Prophet and his companions consistently upheld the Tanzih of God, by interpreting any attribute that may lead to anthropomorphism. It demonstrated that the affirmative tendency of descriptive attributes emerged in Central Asia, namely in Khurasan; it was influenced by a local religio-cultural reading of the Quranic text and was significantly influenced by Eastern and monotheistic religious traditions. Moreover, most scholars of early Islam recognized such an influence in Muqatil’s exegesis and blamed him for launching anthropomorphism in Islam. The paper suggests further scrutiny of the foundational phase of the literal understanding of God’s descriptive attributes in Islamic theology to unveil other constituents of anthropomorphism and corporealism in Islamic theology.

تعالج هذه الورقة البحثية إشكالية إثبات الصفات الخبرية على ظاهرها وأصوله التجسيمية والتشبيهية، من خلال استقراء فكر أحد أعلام أواخر القرن الهجري الأوّل وبدايات القرن الثاني وهو مقاتل بن سليمان البلخي الخراساني. تدرس الورقة تعامل النبيّ عليه السلام وصحابته مع الصفات الخبرية، إما تأويلا أو تفويضا، تنزيها لله سبحانه عن الأشباه والنظائر. ثمّ تحلّل التطوّر من التنزيه إلى التشبيه وما رافقه من تشكّل تيار إثبات الصفات الخبرية على ظاهرها، على يد مقاتل بن سليمان. وتدرس الورقة إنكار عدد من المسلمين لهذا التيار وتشكّل تيار التأويل في الفكر الإسلامي. وتناقش أخيرا سبل المتقدّمين في التعامل مع تفسير مقاتل بسبب ما احتوى عليه من تشبيه وتجسيم صريح، بين من عارضه معارضة كاملة بسبب "كلامه في الصفات بما لا يحلّ"، حسب عبارة القدامى؛ ومن دافع عن مقاتل، إما بتبني أفكاره ومهاجمة خصومه، أو بالتشكيك في المنسوبات إليه. وقد اتّبعت الورقة المنهج الاستقرائي التاريخي لاستقراء تشكّل منهج إثبات الصفات الخبرية على ظاهرها وتطوّره، والمنهج التحليلي النقدي، لتحليل الآراء والأفكار من وجهة نظر علمية تفصل بين الذات الدارسة والموضوع المدروس، بعيدا الأحكام المعيارية والإسقاط والتمذهب. وقد توصّلت الورقة إلى جملة من النتائج منها أن منهج النبيّ عليه السلام وصحابته كان قائما على تنزيه الله سبحانه، تأويلا أو تفويضا، وأنّ تشكّل تيّار إثبات الصفات الخبرية على ظاهرها وما نتج عنه من تشبيه وتجسيم صريح تشكّل في القاليم الشرقية لبلاد الإسلام على يد مقاتل بن سليمان في أواخر القرن الهجري الأوّل وبدايات الثاني؛ ومنها أن أغلب القدامى قد أدركوا الأصول الدخيلة لتيار الإثبات على الظاهر ممثلا في تفسير مقاتل فضعّفوه، باستثناء من وافقه على رأيه. وتوصي الورقة بمزيد تدقيق النظر في المرحلة التأسيسية لتشكّل الفكر العقدي الإسلامي وتطوّره في القرن الهجريّ الأوّل والثاني، باعتباره النواة المركزية التي عليها انبثقت منها كل مفاصل الفكر الإسلامي
