Abstract
Negative politeness is a communication strategy that aims to avoid projecting a negative face on the listener. It is a retreat approach that emphasizes honoring the listener's need for unrestricted freedom while avoiding unnecessary interference. This research aims to explore on the depiction of negative politeness methods in Jalal Barjas' novel "The Notebooks of Warraq," evaluate the numerous branches of this strategy utilized in the novel and determine the factors that influence the usage of these tactics in the major characters' dialogue. This study adopted both descriptive research design and quantitative approaches, where data was collected from the Arabic novel “The Notebooks of Warraq” by Jalal Burgess, and negative politeness strategies were identified and classified based on Dale Hymes’ context theory and Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory. The results show that only four of the ten branches of Brown and Levinson's theory's negative politeness approach were applied by the main characters in this Novel. The most utilized portion is "Be indirect" (66%), followed by "Use hedging questions" (10%), "Apologies" (10%), and finally "Use words of Honor to the listener" (4%). The other six branches of this technique are not mentioned in the Novel. The researcher found that the factors that affect the use of this strategy include the speaker's degree of knowledge of the listener, and his social match. When the speaker is familiar with the listener and has lower power (-D -P), or when he is unfamiliar with the listener and has lower power (+D -P), he tends to use negative politeness strategies. This strategy is used to avoid threats that might harm the face and maintain balance.

يُعتبر التأدب السلبي إستراتيجية اتصال تهدف إلى تجنب فرض الوجه السلبي للمستمع. وهو أسلوب تراجعي يركز على احترام رغبة المستمع في التمتع بحرية دون عوائق، وتجنب التدخل غير المرغوب فيه. تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى اكتشاف إستراتيجيات التأدب السلبي في رواية "دفاتر الورّاق" للكاتب جلال برجس، وتحليل الفروع المختلفة لهذه الإستراتيجية المستخدمة في الرواية، والتعرف على العوامل التي تؤثر على استخدام هذه الإستراتيجيات في حوارات الشخصيات الرئيسة. اعتمدت هذه الدراسة تصميم البحث الوصفي بنوعيه والنهج الكمي، حيث تم جمع البيانات من الرواية العربية "دفاتر الورّاق" للكاتب جلال برجس، وتم تحديد وتصنيف إستراتيجيات التأدب السلبي بناءً على نظرية السياق لديل هايمز ونظرية التأدب لبراون وليفنسون (1987). وأظهرت نتائج الدراسة أنه من بين الفروع العشرة لإستراتيجية التأدب السلبي وفقًا لنظرية براون وليفنسون، استخدمت الشخصيات الرئيسة أربعة فروع فقط في هذه الرواية. وهي الفرع "كن غير مباشر" بنسبة 73% وهو الأكثر استخدامًا، يليه "استخدام أسئلة التحوط" بنسبة 11%، ثم "الاعتذارات" بنسبة 12%، وأخيرًا "استخدام كلمات الشرف للمستمع" بنسبة 4% وهو الأقل استخدامًا. ولم يتم العثور على استخدام للفروع الستة الأخرى لهذه الإستراتيجية في الرواية. وقد وجدت الباحثة أن العوامل التي تؤثر على استخدام هذه الإستراتيجية تتضمن درجة معرفة المتكلم بالمستمع، وموفقه الاجتماعي. فعندما يكون المتكلم مألوفًا بالمستمع وله قوة أدنى(-D -P)، أو عندما يكون غير مألوف بالمستمع وله قوة أدنى (+D -P)فإنه يميل إلى استخدام إستراتيجيات التأدب السلبي، تُستخدم هذه الإستراتيجية لتجنب التهديدات التي قد تمس ماء الوجه وحفظ التوازن في التفاعل.
